Clutch change anyone?
Nov 11th, 2009, 8:00pm

My clutch has just started to slip, thankfully in the off season.

There is no way i can do it myself, and there's no way i can afford ~$1000 Saunders  Huh well i can, but that'd be stoopid

I've worked on cars, but never did a clutch especially on an AWD vehicle.

Anyone have any hook-ups? or recommendations? want to make some cash?

The car can be off the road for up to a week, so it doesn't need to be rushed in a day.

let me know! thanks

Never done a Subaru but I have done clutches on awd vehicles before.

Typical times for transaxle equipped vehicles is 9-13 hours. This is with a hoist and good tall trans jack at my shop. Easiest one I ever did that was awd was......wait. I lied. It was a subaru justy! That one was easy due to the motor being easy to remove with the cvt attached. Took 5 hours.

Basically, its not an easy job but hey, maybe your subaru is easy?

How many hours labour was in the book time? Not knowing your exact year and model I couldn't look it up today.

here's the deal. on most of those clutches they no longer machine the flywheel they replace it. there's where a good bit of your cost comes from. 5-700 if memory serves.

if you want to do it yourself there's two ways. pull the block (easy on the old ea searies engines) or pull the trans. which is what they will do for your model.

in order to pull the trans without a hoist you looking at about a weekend to re and re plus you need about a day, or two, depending on where you get the flywheel machined.

my dad's a tech at saunders and i can assure you that while the price is high. most of that price is based on speed and experience not just taking your money and laughing.

Yup, looked it up today and the book time is 5.5 hours. So you labour is likely somewhere around $545 and the rest is likely parts.

Subaru genuine parts is where most of the guys off the forums usually get their parts, they have an OEM catalog. A lot cheaper. Their clutch kit i believe goes for about ~$500, flywheel, disc, pressure plate, etc.

I know that Saunders has some of the top mechanics, their work is awesome, and i love taking my car their every chance i can. But before i go and spend X amount i just wanted to check around to see if i could find anything cheaper - no harm in that.

Also my clutch doesn't have to be rushed in a weekend, the car can be off the road for up to a week

pm'd you
